Cigarette Butts Litter Pickup Slated for June 1st

Bay Area Recycling for Charities (BARC), in conjunction with the Porterhouse Productions “Great Wakes Festival,” is excited to announce the downtown Traverse City litter pickup day. On the morning of June 1, 2012, BARC, along with the support of partners and community volunteers, will hit the streets armed with brooms and dustpans.

“The focus of this event is on cigarette butt litter and the goal is to educate and drastically reduce the amount of this harmful litter going into our rivers and lakes,” states Andy Gale, founder of BARC. Awareness of this problem is being brought to the forefront by the first bi-annual “butt picking contest”! Teams of volunteers will compete to pickup cigarette butts and BARC will donate $500 on behalf of the winner of this contest to an environmentally based nonprofit group. BARC is looking to gain support within the community and to have this cleanup event twice a year.

To highlight this event, BARC is also partnering with the Traverse Bay Area Tobacco Coalition and the Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve for a deep river clean up. If you are a certified scuba diver, please contact Cory at the GTBUP at www.gtbup.org for information on this event.

Please help support this event by going to the United Way website at http://www.unitedwaynwmi.org

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Friday, June 1, 2012

Playing at 1:00, 3:30, 6:00 and 8:30 pm.

2011/UK/PG-13/124 min
Director, John Madden
Cast: Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel follows a group of British retirees who decide to "outsource" their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India. Enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel and bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, they arrive to find the palace a shell of its former self. Though the new environment is less luxurious than imagined, they are forever transformed by their shared experiences, discovering that life and love can begin again when you let go of the past.
A refreshing, mature fairy tale with a top-notch cast.
-Claudia Puig, USA Today

Charming, delightful and amusing - just what you'd expect from the star-studded cast of veterans.
-Anna Smith, Empire

An ersatz experience, a commingling of forced uplift and exotica.
-Peter Rainer, Christian Science Monitor

Judi Dench delivers one of her most wide-ranging and moving performances.
-David Denby, New Yorker
