Preservation Hall Jazz Band with Steppin' In It:  A Creole Christmas
Tuesday, December 2, 2008

What better way to celebrate the holiday season than with the joyous sounds of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band in the beautiful Traverse City Opera House. In Creole Christmas the Preservation Hall Jazz Band incorporates seasonal gospel numbers along with holiday classics into its healthy repertoire of New Orleans Classics. The band spices up the night by giving such holiday mainstays as “Bells Will Be Ringing,” “Silent Night,” “Swingin’ in a Winter Wonderland” and many others the royal New Orleans treatment. Audience participation is a must!

For nearly half a century, Preservation Hall Jazz Band has brought the sounds and spirit of New Orleans Jazz to audiences worldwide. Located in the historic French Quarter, Preservation Hall is a living monument to the musicians and music of New Orleans.

Originating in the early part of the century, New Orleans Jazz is not to be confused with the two-beat Dixieland style. The tempo is a shade slower than other jazz forms and the melody is always clearly heard with improvisation at its heart. Unobscured by complicated arrangements, its greatness lies in its simplicity. Maintaining the Hall’s balance between tradition and vitality is just as important. The essentials of the style – playing within tempos that reflect its ties to marching in parades, solos that come from the heart more than any other compulsion to “show off,” an abiding connection to the blues and to infectious rhythm – remain unchanged, even as new generations of band members also draw from more contemporary influences. The result is the dance between past and present that gives their music it’s everlasting charm.
